"The 'True Gem' That Even Jeon Hyun-moo Was Rejected From?"…'Original Ul Jjajang' Restaurant Cheongju Geukdong Banjeom, That Very Place for 'Park Mukbang'!

"They say it's a '맛집' (a truly good restaurant), but they 'refuse broadcast appearances'? In a recent episode of 'Jeon Hyun-moo's Plan 2' in Cheongju, the very dish that baffled the production team with its 'refusal to film' was 'Ul Jjajang'!"

Amidst numerous rumors, the place rumored to be the original restaurant for 'Ul Jjajang', which Jeon Hyun-moo had no choice but to eat as takeout, is none other than the 60-year-old establishment, Cheongju 'Geukdong Banjeom'. Let us introduce you to it!

Ulmyeon + Jjajang = Ul Jjajang?…'Cheongju's 'Soul Food'

As its name suggests, 'Ul Jjajang' is a unique Chinese-Korean dish specific to the Cheongju region, combining 'Ulmyeon' (thick noodle soup) and 'Jjajangmyeon' (black bean noodles). It's eaten by mixing thick, rich jjajang sauce over chewy and springy ulmyeon noodles.

The soft texture of ulmyeon blended with the savory and sweet flavor of jjajang is said to offer a completely new experience, different from regular jjajangmyeon. This ulmyeon-style jjajangmyeon, enriched with seafood, might be a matter of preference.

The Dignity of the 'Original', Geukdong Banjeom

While 'Jeon Hyun-moo's Plan' regretfully turned away due to restaurants refusing to film, many Cheongju locals speculate that the place they were searching for was 'Geukdong Banjeom'.

'Geukdong Banjeom' is a Chinese restaurant established by an overseas Chinese family, maintaining its spot for over 60 years, making it a place of 'history' in Cheongju. Its 'Ul Jjajang' is distinctive for having stir-fried egg as a topping, unlike other places, and is praised for its deep, savory jjajang sauce harmonizing perfectly with the chewy ulmyeon, without being overly stimulating.

In particular, their tangsuyuk (sweet and sour pork) is highlighted as a signature menu item, known for its old-style crispy batter, juicy meat, and a clear, tangy-sweet sauce, unlike the reddish sauce found in typical Chinese restaurants. The gan jjajang (black bean noodles with a dry sauce) has a smoky flavor but is not overly salty, and the jjambbong (spicy seafood noodle soup) is not excessively spicy or strong, making it enjoyable without much burden.

The address is 60 Sangdangro 121beon-gil, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju-si, Chungcheongbuk-do. Operating hours are from 11:30 AM to 8:00 PM, Monday through Sunday. There's a break time from 2:30 PM to 5:00 PM, and it's regularly closed every Tuesday. Parking is available behind the building.

[Bonus] Only in Cheongju! 'Ulttae Jjigae' and 'Dwit Moksal'

In the Cheongju episode of 'Jeon Hyun-moo's Plan', besides 'Ul Jjajang', other 'delicacies' unique to Cheongju were introduced.

  • Ulttae Jjigae: A rich and savory stew made with 'ulttae', a small rib section from a pig's neck.
  • Dwit Moksal Stone Grille: A rare cut of pork 'dwit moksal' (back neck meat), only 200g per pig, grilled on a stone slab. Known for its wonderfully chewy texture.

Not a 'Broadcast-Made Restaurant', But a 'Real Restaurant'

Cheongju's hidden gems, brimming with pride in their food and loyal customers, to the extent that they refuse broadcast appearances. Thanks to 'Jeon Hyun-moo's Plan', we've come to know the existence of 'real restaurants' rather than just 'broadcast-made ones'.

If you're planning a trip to Cheongju, how about having a special culinary experience at 'Geukdong Banjeom', the original 'Ul Jjajang' restaurant?
